This is a Mount Carbon Brewery Thermometer was made for the Mount Carbon Brewery located in Pottsville, PA. The Mount Carbon brewery ran from 1845 to 1976 under various owners and names. Their Motto was “A Mellow Brew from the Mountains”.  Bavarian Type Beer was the breweries flagship beer throughout it’s operation. Production of the brewery ceased in 1976 and brand licensing was sold to D. G. Yuengling (another brewery in the Pottsville, Pa area and currently oldest brewery in America).

The thermometer is rather small in size at around 5.5 inch wide which leads me to believe these may have been distributed to the public to advertise the brewery’s Bavarian Beer. It even came with what I believe is the original box. The brewery used the old dutchman graphic on a variety of advertising items like trays, thermometers, labels, coasters, and signs. The Mount Carbon Brewery also had another variation of thermometer in the form of a small desktop version made of metal and plastic with the old dutchman’s face on it. The thermometer is in beautiful condition; by far the best example of one I have ever seen; although I haven’t seen to many of these in personal collections so I’m not sure of the rarity.
