Here is a Ruhstallers Gilt Edge Beer Sign from the Buffalo Brewing Company located in Sacramento, CA. This Ruhstallers Beer Sign is from the late 1800’s era and is in excellent condition for it’s age.
This sign was made by the American Art Works sign company located in Coshocton, OH. The sign is approximately 20″ wide and is made of embossed tin with a stock lithograph of a cockfight gambling scene on it. The American Art Works stock scene is called “The Cockfight”. Signs like this one are known as a “Self-Framed Tin Sign”. The graphics on the Gilt Edge Beer Sign is two old guys placing bets on a rooster “cockfight” with a wooden case of Ruhstaller’s Gilt Edge Beer bottles in the background. On the left the the sign the words “Best Beer Brewed” is painted on the side of the barn.
There’s actually a second variation of this sign with the same graphics except the words “Gilt Edge Beer” is written in gold lettering in the black negative space of the frame outside of the stock scene. I am actively looking for that variation to add to my collection; please contact me if you have that variation.
