The J. W. Russell & Company was established in 1878 by two partners by the names of J. W. Russell and E. Dauphinat located at New York, NY. J. W. Russell & Company specialized in creating large ornate glass signs, brass signs, and aluminum signs for various industries and companies across the country. Some of clients that J. W. Russell & Company produced advertising signs for were from industries like insurance, steamships, railroad, shoes, physician, dentist, cigars, liquor, and breweries just to name a few.
The J. W. Russell & Co. was best known for producing elegant and detailed reverse-painted glass signs with elaborate wooden and plaster frames for breweries too. Signs like these would have been displayed inside bars, taverns, and distributors to advertise the brewery as well as the product that they produced.
