parisian novelty companyThe Parisian Novelty Company was established by Louis L Joseph in 1898 located in Chicago, IL. Parisian Novelty Co. produced advertising novelties such as toys, signs, and other small advertising items.

The owner Joseph, had a preference for novelties that used celluloid as a major component in their manufacture and he incorporated celluloid into a lot of his products.

Celluloid had only been around in various forms since the early 1860s and the brand Celluloid had only appeared in 1870. In its finished state, Celluloid was not only was hard and durable, it was also flexible and importantly, for manufacturers like Joseph, it could be completely transparent. It was, quite literally, the world’s first commercially successful plastic.
One of the earliest form of novelties made by the company was a small hand mirror that could be covered by an ornamental celluloid disc. In fact, Louis Joseph’s manufacturing superintendent, a man named Joseph Komorous, actually filed for a patent to cover the invention of this hand mirror also known as pocket mirror in 1907 and it is interesting to note that Louis Joseph acted as one of the witnesses to the patent.
Parisian Novelty Company produced it’s products all the way up until 2008 when they finally closed. According to its own advertising it manufactures metal button parts to fabricate advertising buttons, promotional buttons, campaign buttons, or for anything your imagination conceives! What a novel idea!
